Sedentary lifestyle may up risk of kidney disease
Being sedentary for too long during the day may be a risk factor for chronic kidney disease, scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have found.
Sedentary behaviour (engaging in activities in the seated or lying position that barely raise the energy expenditure above resting level) is commonly confused with physical inactivity (lack of moderate/vigorous physical activity).
Sedentary behaviour is an important risk factor for diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, but it's unclear whether it also increases the risk of chronic kidney disease.
Srini Beddhu from University of Utah School of Medicine, along with Dominique Ferranti and their colleagues examined this topic in 5,873 adults in whom intensity and duration of physical activities were measured.
The researchers found that each 80 minutes/day (assuming 16 awake hours/day) increase in sedentary duration was associated with a 20 per cent increased likelihood of chronic kidney disease.
This association was independent of moderate/vigorous physical activity duration, demographics, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, lung disease and mobility limitations.
Moreover, this association persisted even after adjusting for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.
"Sedentary behaviour, which is not mere lack of moderate/vigourous physical activity, is likely an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease," said Beddhu.
"It needs to be tested whether sedentary behaviour affects the progression of chronic kidney disease, and thereby, increases the risk of end stage renal disease.
"Hence, interventions targeting sedentary behaviour to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease need to be conducted," Beddhu said.

Food allergy prevention: should we give infants peanuts?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies in children have increased by about 50% between 1997 and 2011. There is no clear answer as to why this is, but as a result of this dramatic increase, the focus has shifted from treatment to prevention. Now, a new review presents the latest evidence on how to prevent food allergies in children.

The review is published in CMAJ, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, and provides guidance for physicians and families on how they should introduce foods to infants in order to decrease allergy risks.
food allergy takes place when the body produces an immune response to certain foods. This immune response can be life threatening - as in the case of anaphylaxis. Though the immune system is in place to protect us from germs, in people with food allergies, it mistakes foods for harmful objects.
Though any food can cause an allergic response, the eight foods that account for 90% of all reactions are: cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish.
Previous guidelines suggested parents should avoid introducing potentially allergenic foods until 12-36 months of age in babies that have a high risk for reactions - for example, if a sibling has a food allergy.
In 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that parents avoid introducing high-risk infants to cow's milk until 12 months, eggs until 24 months, and nuts and fish until 36 months.
Introducing peanuts between 4-11 months of age 'beneficial'
The researchers of this latest review - led by Drs. Elissa Abrams and Allan Becker, from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada - say a recent randomized controlled trial, called the Learning Early About Peanut (LEAP) study, concluded that giving peanuts to children at high risk of peanut allergy early, rather than late, reduced food allergy risk by 80%.

The team cautions, however, that such children should probably have an allergist's evaluation before being introduced to peanuts.
Additionally, a prospective study - conducted in 2006 and involving over 1,600 children who were followed from birth to 5 years of age - concluded that there was an increased risk of wheat allergy among children introduced to wheat from the age of 6 months.
Following on from the LEAP study, the AAP and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) now advise that high-risk infants should be introduced to peanuts between 4-11 months of age.
Although some women have avoided consuming potentially allergenic foods during pregnancy and breastfeeding to try to prevent allergy development in their babies, the review also notes that current guidelines do not support these avoidance diets.

John Abraham injured while shooting action scene for Force 2


Bollywood actor John Abraham underwent a surgery following a knee injury he sustained while shooting an action scene for his upcoming flick Force 2.
According to a foreign news agency, the producer of the film Vipul Shah said that John Abraham was shooting a scene in which he had to break a door. He damaged his knee in the process after successfully filming the scene.
Shah added that the actor was advised bed rest but he insisted on shooting the film. He made his injury by resuming the film shooting and had undergo surgery in which blood clots were removed.
The filming was brought to halt after the operation whereas the action scenes aren’t being shot as well. The producer added that the dialogue sequence will be filmed whereas crew may shoot the remaining action scenes.
Force 2, a sequel to Force, stars John Abraham and Sonakshi Sinha in leading roles. The flick is directed by Abhinay Deo and will be released in 2016.

Feel younger, live longer. It's no slogan — these are actual benefits of regular exercise. People with high levels of physical fitness are at lower risk of dying from a variety of causes, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

There's more good news. Research also shows that exercise enhances sleep, prevents weight gain, and reduces the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even depression.
"One study found that when breast cancer survivors engaged in exercise, there were marked improvements in physical activity, strength, maintaining weight, and social well-being," explains Rachel Permuth-Levine, PhD, deputy director for the Office of Strategic and Innovative Programs at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
"Another study looked at patients with stable heart failure and determined that exercise relieves symptoms, improves quality of life, reduces hospitalization, and in some cases, reduces the risk of death," adds Dr. Permuth-Levine. She points out that exercise isn't just important for people who are already living with health conditions: "If we can see benefits of moderate exercise in people who are recovering from disease, we might see even greater benefits in those of us who are generally well."
Physical Fitness: Exercise Basics
Physical activity doesn't have to be strenuous to produce results. Even moderate exercise five to six times a week can lead to lasting health benefits.
When incorporating more physical activity into your life, remember three simple guidelines:
Exercise at moderate intensity for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes spread over the course of each week.
Avoid periods of inactivity; some exercise at any level of intensity is better than none.
At least twice a week, supplement aerobic exercise (cardio) with weight-bearing activities that strengthen all major muscle groups.
Physical Fitness: Making Exercise a Habit
The number one reason most people say they don't exercise is lack of time. If you find it difficult to fit extended periods of exercise into your schedule, keep in mind that short bouts of physical activity in 10-minute segments will nonetheless help you achieve health benefits. Advises Permuth-Levine, "Even in the absence of weight loss, relatively brief periods of exercise every day reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease."
Set realistic goals and take small steps to fit more movement into your daily life, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to the grocery store instead of driving. "The key is to start gradually and be prepared," says Permuth-Levine. "Have your shoes, pedometer, and music ready so you don't have any excuses."
To help you stick with your new exercise habit, vary your routine, like swimming one day and walking the next. Get out and start a baseball or soccer game with your kids. Even if the weather doesn't cooperate, have a plan B — use an exercise bike in your home, scope out exercise equipment at a nearby community center, or consider joining a health club. The trick is to get to the point where you look at exercise like brushing your teeth and getting enough sleep — as essential to your well-being.
Remember that physical fitness is attainable. Even with small changes, you can reap big rewards that will pay off for years to come.

‪#‎Diamonds‬ can help spot ‪#‎cancers‬ at early stage.
‪#‎Researchers‬ have found a way to use diamonds to act as beacons in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and identify cancerous tumours before they become life-threatening.
Their findings revealed how a synthetic version of the precious gem can light up early-stage cancers in MRI scans.
"We knew nano diamonds were of interest for delivering drugs during chemotherapy because they are largely non-toxic and non-reactive," said David Reilly from University of Sydney in Australia.
"We thought we could build on these non-toxic properties realising that diamonds have magnetic characteristics enabling them to act as beacons in MRIs," Reilly noted.
The researchers turned their ‪#‎attention‬ to hyperpolarising nano-diamonds, a process of aligning atoms inside a diamond so they create a‪#‎signal‬ detectable by an MRI scanner.
"By attaching hyperpolarised diamonds to molecules targeting cancers the technique can allow tracking of the molecules' movement in the ‪#‎body‬," the study's lead author Ewa Rej from ‪#‎University‬ of Sydney noted.
"This is a ‪#‎great‬ example of how quantum physics research tackles real-world problems, in this case opening the way for us to ‪#‎image‬ and ‪#‎target‬cancers long before they become ‪#‎life‬-threatening.
